Simi Clinic to host 'meet and greet' fund-raiser

More than 39 years after the Free Clinic of Simi Valley hosted its first “meet and greet" event, the nonprofit organization is hosting another to garner support and hopefully close its funding gap.

The clinic, which opened in 1971, is struggling to provide medical and dental services to a clientele growing at an average rate of 10 percent per year while funding is flat. The clinic is supported primarily by grants from private foundations and healthcare industry organizations. Some foundations have reduced giving because of low returns on investment portfolios. Others have changed their philanthropic focus because of the political climate surrounding the national healthcare debate or the economy.

“One of our previous foundation donors put all their money into lobbying for healthcare reform in 2009,” said Executive Director Fred Bauermeister. “Another realigned their priorities due to the economy to primary services like food and shelter.”
