Guide For Team Captains
Role of a Team Captain
Team Captains lead their team in efforts to increase awareness about Free Clinic of Simi Valley and raise funds to support the programs of the Clinic.
Register your Team
Visit Race Registration and "Register Now" for the Fredrick Michael Gibson 5K & 10K Run for Depression Awareness. Choose "Create a Team" and follow the prompts.
Build a Team
The first part is done...you have registered for the event and have created a team on the event’s official website. Now it is time to grow and invite others to participate as a member of your team – the sky is the limit, but we suggest you set a goal of at least ten members. Sending an email to everyone in your address book or making a telephone call are important tried-and-true ways to recruit members, but try thinking of new, creative avenues to explore. Perhaps post a flyer at a local business, “pyramid” your team by asking each member to recruit 3 more individuals to join the team, or set-up a recruiting table at your club or place of worship. Link to the Clinic's Facebook event page here. Remind your team members to register for the walk-run on the event website and post their name on your team page.
Encourage Team Spirit
Building “team spirit” can be easily done with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. Consider having a Team Kick-off Meeting at your house, a park, or even a local pizza joint to get people excited! Consider developing a theme for your team, encouraging people to dress for that theme or making special shirts or hats to wear on the day of the event. At your kick-off meeting, you can discuss details and establish an email network so your team can stay in touch and encourage each other.
Motivate your Team to Surpass Fundraising Goals
The first thing to remind your team is that most people give just because they are asked. Also, remember there is no winning or losing – for every one person contacted that’s one more person who is aware of Free Clinic of Simi Valley. We suggest each team member set a goal of raising a minimum of $100 each. Stay in communication with your team members by email – share fundraising tips, highlight the efforts of a team member or even suggest group fundraising efforts.
